An Iraqi diplomatic official in the capital, Baghdad, told Al -Arabi Al -Jadeed that the visit of Syrian Foreign Minister Ahmed Al -Shaibani to Iraq returned on the agenda of the two countries again, after postponing it last month by a Syrian decision, stressing that the visit will discuss many and thorny files between Damascus and Baghdad, and it is unlikely that it will restore the full relations between the two countries, but it will establish important understandings.
The Syrian Foreign Minister was scheduled to make an official visit to Baghdad on the twenty -second of last February, but it was suddenly postponed without announcing any of the two countries. However, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein later revealed in statements that came in response to a question about the same topic: “I think the campaign on the communication sites caused the postponement of Al -Shaibani’s visit to Baghdad,” referring to the campaign launched by Iraqi armed groups and militias on the communication sites and media owned by it rejecting the visit and some figures launched threats against the minister in this context.
Today, Thursday, a senior Iraqi diplomatic official told Al -Arabi Al -Jadeed that the Syrian neighborhood conference, which was held a few days ago in the Jordanian capital, Amman, “has resulted in many understandings and clarified some details by the Iraqi side of the Syrian delegation.” The official stressed that the visit of Minister Ahmed Al -Shaibani to Baghdad “returned to the agenda of the two countries, and the visit will be very close, based on coordination between Minister Fouad Hussein and Syrian Foreign Minister Ahmed Al -Shaibani.”
According to the same official, “the Syrian side will discuss various security and political files, in addition to the issue of the abuses that took place in the past days and the Syrian community in Iraq has been on.”
The Iraqi official concluded that “the visit is not expected to result in a complete normalization of relations between Iraq and Syria with its new administration, but it will certainly open channels that communicate directly in many files. It is certain that the current Iraqi decision is that the file file with Syria be far from the effects of armed factions, which are pushing towards the estrangement or even the direct rivalry with the new Syria,” according to his saying.
Baghdad and Iraqi cities witnessed several series of arrests against Syrian citizens due to comments on the communication sites and pictures that they published related to the developments of what is happening in their country. Baghdad also recorded physical attacks on a number of them, and after that, Prime Minister Muhammad Shi’a Al -Sudani directed the formation of an investigation committee with these attacks and the pursuit of its perpetrators.
