Lula launches multimillion-dollar plan to improve favelas in event with award for SC project
With the aim of improving the urbanization of favelas in the most vulnerable conditions, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva launched this Thursday the Periferia Viva program, which provides for an investment of R$ 7 billion within the New PAC, the Acceleration Program Growth. At the event, social projects in the country were awarded and one of them was Mulheres em Ação, from Palhoça, which was represented in Brasilia by leaders of that work.

The event was attended by federal representative Ana Paula Lima (PT-SC), vice president of the Lula government in the Chamber of Deputies. She also welcomed the Palhoça businesswomen who work in the Frei Damião and Brejaru neighborhoods in the project that encourages female empowerment and income generation.
– It is a historic initiative of the federal government to transform the living conditions of the most vulnerable communities in the country – highlighted Ana Paula Lima.
Prepared with the collaboration of several ministries, the Periferia Viva program foresees a series of actions to improve the living conditions of vulnerable communities in the capital and other regions. To access resources it is necessary to register projects within the criteria established by the program.

– Today is the day when the periphery of this country becomes visible to the government and society. They will no longer be invisible, we will be seeing them – stated President Lula at the launch.
States and municipalities can present projects to be executed with federal resources and local counterparts. The objective is to improve favelas, stilt houses, informal subdivisions, slope containment, basic sanitation, road system, public lighting, housing improvements and environmental recovery, among others. To register projects it is necessary to find more information at Ministry of Cities website and fill out guides.
The IBGE published data from the 2022 Demographic Census on vulnerable communities, which include favelas. Santa Catarina has 161 communities and the largest number is in Florianópolis, 45 in total. In second place is Blumenau with 37 communities and in third place São José with 10. The Frei Damião neighborhood, in Palhoça, is the vulnerable community in SC with the largest number of inhabitants, 7,273 people, according to the IBGE.
Award-winning SC project
Mulheres em Ação, which operates in one of the most vulnerable regions of the state, is a non-governmental organization that works for the economic and social development of the Frei Damião and Brejaru neighborhoods, in Palhoça. Offers professional training courses, conferences and a community hour.
