Starting this November, the restriction on fishing for native fish in the river basins of Minas Gerais will come into effect due to the piracema period (fish reproduction period).
At this time of year, several species of fish move to the headwaters of the rivers with the aim of continuing the reproductive cycle.
Restrictions on fishing in the river basins of Minas Gerais will continue until February 28, 2025. The Military Police of Minas Gerais (PMMG) and the Secretary of State for the Environment and Sustainable Development (Semad) held a press conference to reinforce the recommendations for this period.
Piracema rules
During the piracema, only fishing for exotic species (non-native species that were introduced by man) and hybrids is allowed, with a limit of three kilos per day plus one specimen.
To protect fish reproduction during the piracema, fishing in Minas Gerais must follow distance restrictions in the vicinity of specific points, such as river confluences, dams, dams, lagoons and rapids.
These areas have minimum fishing limits upstream (before) and downstream (after) the stream to ensure that fish reach the headwaters and complete their reproductive cycle.
The teams allowed during the piracema are:
- Hand line with hook;
- Stick;
- Simple reed;
- Fishing reel or reel
- Natural or artificial baits
fishing card
The use of nets and other equipment that can capture various specimens is prohibited. However, to carry fish and fishing equipment, even in situations where the activity is authorized, it is important that the fisherman carry and keep his fishing card updated.
The document can be obtained by filling out the form available on the page State Forestry Institute website (FIE). Anyone who sells, explores, processes and stores fish must register with the IEF.
fish populations in natureProducts, frozen or not, coming from continental waters, existing in slaughterhouses, fishmongers, fishermen’s colonies and guilds must also be communicated to the agency.
The requirement also applies to stock stored by professional fishermen, warehouses, points of sale, warehouses and cold rooms, held by street vendors, bars, restaurants, hotels and the like.
Preventive operations
The attention of Semad and the Military Police to the Piracema period begins even before this closed period. In October, the institutions began preventive work, with the aim of guiding fishermen and merchants about the restrictions.
An example of this preventive care is Operation Colonia, coordinated by the Central Metropolitan Regional Inspection Unit, but which covers the entire state. Accompanied by the Military Police, the inspectors travel to the fishing colonies and hold meetings and conferences.
“The objective is to explain the rules in this period of restrictions. With this we want to avoid fishing during this period, which is very harmful to the environment, and also avoid fines, because if the fisherman follows the rules he will not suffer sanctions,” highlights the Superintendent of Inspection of the Semad, Gustavo. Endrigo de Sá Fonseca.
