Today (Monday), the European Union in Brussels will hold a conference for donors around Syria. The 27 countries are seeking to mobilize the international community to rebuild the devastating country.
A European Union official said: The conference this year will certainly be different. He added that there is an opportunity, but it is not great enough, so we must use it, otherwise it will be too late.
For the first time, the ninth conference will attend government representatives in Damascus. The Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al -Shaibani is scheduled to represent his country in Brussels, on the sidelines of a meeting of the foreign ministers of the European Union.
Germany pledged, before the start of the conference, to provide assistance to Syria of 300 million euros.
The donor conference succeeded last year in collecting about 7.5 billion euros for Syria, but the efforts made to achieve this result have become at risk this year due to the United States’ decision to suspend its international aid.
The United States has so far been the main donor of international aid to Syria, according to the United Nations, and it will be represented in the conference.
A European official stated that “the comprehensive humanitarian aid system was generally dependent on two pillars, the first is very important and consisted of the United States, and the second from the European Union and its member state.”
He added that one of these two pillars has currently shrunk largely, if not completely canceled, and this means a decrease in the funds available to humanitarian aid all over the world.
