Under the direction of the governments of Sweden, Italy, Denmark and the Netherlands, the leaders of the European Union in October 2024 called for the enactment of new urgent legislation to increase the deportations and accelerate them, and asked the UNHCR as “innovative methods” to combat irregular immigration. Last Tuesday, the European Commission responded by offering its plan to impose tougher rules for deporting immigrants and imposing more strict control. The plan will now be subject to review and perhaps to amend the capitals of the European Union as well as the European Parliament, before passing it as a law.
In its plan, the European Commission seeks to pressure the rejected migrants requests for their resort to cooperate with the official authorities regarding their return operations to their countries of origin, by reducing the benefits assigned to them, for example. Besides, the tightening of procedures in security threats comes with the imposition of strict rules on people who are classified as a security threat, including expanding the reasons that allow their detention. The plan also provides for facilitating the recognition of the countries of the Union of decisions to restore immigrants, in order to accelerate procedures and deportations. The UNHCR proposes to transfer rejected asylum seekers to re -centers outside the European Union countries, in addition to other procedures.
According to the European Commission, the European Union’s executive arm, only about 20% of the rejected asylum seekers leave the union’s countries, that is, one out of every five immigrants, orders to leave are already returning to his country of origin after a decision to do so.
