The World Food Program announced on Friday the cancellation of food aid to more than a million people in Burma, as of April due to the “sharp deficiency of financing”.
The United States contributed 4.4 billion dollars of funding for the United Nations World Food Program of $ 9.7 billion in 2024, but US President Donald Trump decided to reduce his country’s funding for international aid.
Burma has been witnessing a civil war since the 2021 military coup. The World Food Program indicates that more than 15 million of the country’s 51 million population are unable to meet their daily food needs.
The international organization stated in a statement that “the aid to the World Foods program necessary for life will be canceled for more than a million people in Burma as of April as a result of the severe shortage of financing.”
She added that the decision comes “at a time when conflicts, displacement and restrictions are exacerbated by (the basics) of the needs of food aid significantly.”
The statement did not mention the United States or any other donor country by name.
The director of Burma, the World Food Program, Michael Danford, told France Press that the organization suffers “a lack of financing because a group of various donors were unable to meet our needs … that includes the United States, but it is certainly not alone”.
In the neighboring Bangladesh, the United Nations Secretary -General Antonio Guterres met on Friday with people from Rohingya, Ferroa Burma, and they are now threatened by aid.
A million Rohingya people live in camps along the border after they fled a 2017 military campaign that human rights groups described as extermination.
The World Food Program announced this month that the decline in financing will lead to a reduction in monthly food vouchers in the camps from $ 12.50 to six dollars per person.
The food program states that it needs “urgently $ 60 million to maintain food aid that saves the lives of Burma residents this year.”
