A discussion document prepared by the European Union Foreign Affairs Office showed and seen by “Reuters” today, Friday, that the bloc should be ready to increase its military aid to Ukraine this year, which may reach twice to reach 40 billion euros (43 billion dollars) if necessary.
The document is an updated copy of a previous proposal that set the requirements of Ukraine without specifying a target amount.
It states that each of the European Union countries participating in this effort must contribute “to suit its economic weight.”
In light of the ambiguity surrounding the future of American support for Ukraine, the European Union countries expressed their general readiness to continue their support in the war that started with the Russian invasion in 2022. But diplomats say a number of countries are opposed to defining fixed support goals.
The document indicates that the European Union provided military aid worth about 20 billion euros to Ukraine last year and its country encourages at least pumping the same amount in 2025 so that “the total aid is possible” to 40 billion euros, according to Kiev’s needs.
European Union leaders are likely to discuss the proposal next week.
