
Today, Friday, the African Union expressed its deep concern over the developments of the situation in the Ethiopian Tigray region, where political differences between the rival factions threaten the fragile peace agreement that ended the war in the region.
In an official statement – the Federation confirmed that it is closely following the escalation of tensions within the Tigray People Liberation Front, warning of the seriousness of the situation on regional stability.
He also stressed the importance of respecting the peace agreement, calling on all parties to exercise restraint and engage in a constructive dialogue to prevent the region from slipping into a new round of violence.
The African Union affirmed in its statement that the commitment to the peace agreement is necessary to preserve the stability that has been achieved after long suffering, and to create the atmosphere for national reconciliation and sustainable development in the region.
The Federation stressed the importance of achieving a comprehensive political settlement that guarantees the participation of all parties, warning that any setback may lead to the exacerbation of the humanitarian and political conditions in the region.
For his part, the governor of the Tigray region warned that the region is facing a worsening humanitarian crisis, due to the failure of the efforts to return the displaced and the internal conflicts that hinder stability.
He added that the Tigray Liberation Front, which he described as a “defected faction”, declared itself the only legitimate authority in the region, which created political chaos that threatens societal peace.
The governor of Tigray also condemned the presence of Eritrean forces inside the region, considering that this represents a serious threat to his stability, calling on the Ethiopian federal government to assume its responsibility and protect the region from any external interventions that may lead to more escalation.

The governor of the region called on the international community to intervene to prevent the exacerbation of the crisis and pressure in order to implement the Pretoria Agreement in full. He also called for an immediate move to prevent the expansion of the Tigray Liberation Front, which he said was a threat to the entire region of the region.
The Pretoria Peace Agreement, signed in November 2022, ended the bloody war that lasted for two years between the Ethiopian federal government and the Tigray Liberation Front, and killed up to 600,000 people, according to some estimates.
However, the delay in implementing the provisions of the fully agreement led to the deepening of political divisions within the region, which raised fears of the outbreak of a new conflict.
