Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed yesterday (Wednesday) the need to consider the establishment of a security zone along the border with Ukraine, after the liberation of these lands, during his first visit to the Corsak region in the west of the country, wearing a military uniform since the penetration of Ukraine last August.
Putin called on his forces to defeat the Ukrainian forces and liberate the entire area as soon as possible, and according to the Russian “Interfax” agency, Putin said he would deal with the soldiers who were captured in the Kursk region as terrorists.
Putin visited the control center used by Russian forces, and listened to a report from the head of the Russian General Staff Valerie Gerasimov, who told him that the Ukrainian forces in Kursk are now besieged.
Gerasimov said that more than 400 Ukrainian soldiers were captured in Kursk, indicating that more than 86% of the lands occupied by the Ukrainian forces in the Korsk region were retrieved.
The Russian Ministry of Defense announced earlier yesterday the restoration of control of five other villages of the Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region, while videos were circulated showing Russian soldiers in the center of Soda, the largest city in the region, which is located on a major road near the border with Ukraine.
The Chief of Staff of the Russian Army said that the Russian forces liberated 24 towns of Kursk’s lands during the past five days, indicating that Russian soldiers entered the Ukrainian area of Sumi in some parts of the border.
On the other hand, the Ukrainian army commander said that his forces will continue their operations in the Kursk area as long as it was appropriate and necessary, adding that the fighting continues in the town of Soda and its surroundings.
