President Lula spoke publicly for the first time, this Wednesday (11/20), about the alleged plan drawn up by the military in 2022 to try to poison the PT and vice president Geraldo Alckmin.
The plan was discovered after an investigation by federal police and led to the arrest, on Tuesday (11/19), of four high-ranking Army soldiers and a PF agent suspected of orchestrating the deaths of Lula and Alckmin to prevent their inauguration.
The president spoke on the subject during a speech at the opening of the dinner he hosted for Chinese President Xi Jinping, who visited Brasilia on Wednesday. The dinner took place at the Itamaraty Palace and was closed to the press.
The column had access to a video of the moment in which Lula speaks about the case. The PT begins his speech by greeting the authorities and, when talking about the vice president, he says that Geraldo Alckmin is only having dinner because he “escaped” poisoning.
“I would like to begin by greeting my dear colleague Janja, greeting my colleague Xi Jinping, president of the People’s Republic of China, greeting our colleague Dilma Rousseff, president of the New Development Bank. And congratulate our comrade Geraldo Alckmin, vice president of the Republic, minister of Development and Commerce, who escaped poisoning and is here with us,” said President Lula.
The statement by the head of the Planalto Palace was confirmed to the column by at least two palace ministers who were at the event and caused laughter among the guests present. Until then, Lula had not yet spoken publicly on the issue.

As the column shows, Lula was personally informed of the operation by the general director of the PF, A.ndrei passesos, early Tuesday morning. The PT found out about the case at the hotel where he was staying in Rio de Janeiro for the G20 summit.
According to a minister who spoke with Lula after the operation, the president was “perplexed and outraged” by the alleged plan. The PT also indicated that he intends to wait for the investigations to speak more about the issue.
