The British Prime Minister is organizing a virtual summit in London today, Saturday, with about 25 leaders who are ready to help maintain peace in Ukraine if a ceasefire with Russia “does not take peace seriously,” said Kiir Starmer.
Several European countries are scheduled to participate alongside Ukraine, NATO, the European Commission, Canada and Australia in this meeting in the morning in order to determine the outlines of the alliance of the countries that are prepared to “support a fair and lasting peace” in Ukraine, according to a statement issued by Downing Street.
The United States calls for a truce as soon as possible, and has exerted great pressure on Ukrainian President Folodimir Zellinski, who recently agreed on Tuesday to stop hostilities for 30 days, provided that Russia also committed to that.
But Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed reservations and pointed to “important issues” that must be resolved before the ceasefire.
Starmer said on Friday evening in a statement that “the Kremlin completely ignored President Donald Trump’s proposal on the ceasefire proves that Putin is not serious about peace.”
Starmer is leading with French President Emmanuel Macron efforts to form an alliance of countries that intend to continue supporting Ukraine since Trump has started direct negotiations with Moscow in February.
According to Dowoning Street, the Saturday meeting aims to “deepen the understanding of how countries plan to contribute to this alliance, before a military planning session next week.”
This participation can take the form of sending forces- a commitment that Paris, London and Ankara said it is ready to provide it- but also providing more logistical support.
“If Russia has finally sat at the negotiating table, we must be ready to monitor the ceasefire to ensure that it is always serious and always.”
He added that if Moscow refuses to sign this American agreement, “We must do everything we can to increase economic pressure on Russia to end this war.”
On Thursday, Putin stressed the need to ensure any settlement of “long -term peace”, in a veiled indication of Russia’s demand to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO (NATO).
During the night, the governor of the Ukrainian region of Jeresson, Olexander Brocodine, told the “Telegram” application of the death of a 43 -year -old man, “found under the ruins of a house destroyed” a Russian raid.
“There is a lot of work to be done, but there are reasons that call for cautious optimism,” said US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday after the meeting of the Group of Seven Group in Canada.
“We will continue to work to enhance support for Ukraine and for a solid and permanent peace,” said Emmanuel Macron on the Saturday meeting.
In addition to the French President and Voludimir Zellinski, Swedish Prime Minister Olf Christmson and Spanish leader Pedro Sanchez confirmed their presence.
The meeting is also expected to attend the Secretary -General of NATO, Mark Route, President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Line, and the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa.
